What inspired you to get into the Cannabis industry?

I’ve used cannabis for most of my life. To me, it’s a wonderful way to build connections with other people. Whether that’s smoking with a group of friends and family, or just using cannabis to remain thoughtful and compassionate. My background is primarily in retail, so it seemed like a perfect fit to pursue cannabis retail. Once I started as a budtender with The Novel Tree - I realized how important and valuable the connection between consumers and budtenders can be.

Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you as a leader? How do apply these values day-to-day?

Suzanne. She is inspiring in her attitude towards life, her compassion for people, and her tireless work ethic. When she was interviewing for a position several years ago- she told me that she was using three words as her guiding principles. Those words were consistent, compassionate, and constructive. The three C’s. I still use these words as a guide when making decisions and providing leadership.

What makes The Novel Tree special?

Our team. We are a group of people who care about each other and the world- and that shows in our work together and the service we provide to guests.

What is the biggest challenge you face today?

Balancing work and family! I love my work, and I love my family- and it can be challenging to make sure they get the proper amount of love 😊

Where do you think/hope the industry will be in 3-5 years?

I hope that more states will move to legalizing recreational cannabis use. I hope that it will also be decriminalized nationwide. I hope that the industry in Washington state will continue to maintain high standards for producer/processors and that consumers will be able to access what they need for medical and recreational use. I also have a vision/dream that psychologists will use cannabis in their practices to support patients.

How do you encourage creative thinking within The Novel Tree?

I think that providing freedom and encouragement allows people the space to feel creative. There are far too many people in this world that believe they aren’t creative- but humans are creative by nature. Whether that’s creating art, problem solving, or innovating- it all requires creativity. To me, it’s all about creating that space and taking the pressure out of it.

My favorite is Secret Gardens of Washington's Crouching Tiger Hidden Alien.
