Hashish, or hash, is a cannabis product composed of compressed or purified preparations of stalked resin glands, called trichomes. It contains the same active ingredients as marijuana—such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabinoids—but often in higher concentrations than the unsifted buds or leaves from which marijuana is made.
Hash has seen a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years. The word “hash” now can refer to so many things - BHO (Butane Hash Oil), Rosin, Bubble Hash, Hash Oil, Shatter, Sugar Wax and the list goes on and on. Cannabis concentrates seem to be the next evolution of cannabis and are becoming more and more popular every day. Being a lover of all things hash I decided to take a look backwards, back to the origins of how all hash and cannabis concentrates came to be.
Fortunately for me I didn’t have to look too far, since there is an artisan hash maker, making traditional hash, the way it has been made since the beginning, located nearby in Washington’s beautiful Skagit Valley. Mark Brinn, Owner of Funky Skunk Extracts is paying respect to "a technique that dates back hundreds of years originating in the Rif Mountains of Morocco. We hope to honor the original hash makers by refraining from the use of solvents, and instead adhering to - and continuously striving to improve upon - their traditional methods."
Funky Skunk uses the traditional dry sift method, combined with extremely low temperatures for removing the valuable kief (or trichomes) from the plant. Mark works delicately, with an artist’s touch, sifting the ganja flowers over an extremely fine screen - "I'm not going for quantity but for quality." The sifting is truly an art learned through experience, the different strains need to be handled in different ways, as the sifter is always trying to balance the purity of the final product with its yield.
Next, Mark uses a simple hand operated press to compress the kief into an 8" x 10" brick about 1/4" thick. The intense pressure creates just enough heat to gently melt the Trichomes together, creating a gorgeous golden slab of pure Cannabis Concentrate goodness.
I have since spent some time sampling this wonderful product and I cannot recommend it enough! First of all, adding hash to a bowl or joint is an easy, fast and cost-efficient way to turn average flowers into an exceptional experience, and can turn top shelf flowers into a truly memorable event.
Secondly, the process of adding hash gives you, the consumer, complete control of your experience. Add a sativa blend of hash to your bowl for an extra cerebral and motivational kick before a creative endeavor. Or, add a sprinkle of an indica based hash to your evening joint for some powerful relaxation and sedative effects for a deep night’s sleep. The options are endless!
Finally I like Funky Skunk's Hash and Kief because it is such a safe product and experience. It is a true solvent-less, completely chemical free cannabis concentrate and Funky Skunk uses the most natural and pure ingredients available. Its Aquaponics’ farming system also uses between 5-10% of the water that traditional agricultural methods use, making Funky Skunk's products safe for both people and the planet.
So that’s it folks, in conclusion, I have become a huge fan of Funky Skunk Extractions. I love the company’s values and mission, and I could as well as the effects of their products. I strongly recommend that all cannabis enthusiasts take a little step back into history and do a little exploration into the world of traditionally pressed hash. Please feel free to stop by The Novel Tree to ask any further questions and to pick up some of this amazing hash for yourself. Cheers!!
