How to Make a Gravity Bong: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
If you've ever wanted a powerful, lung-busting hit using nothing but household items, the gravity bong — sometimes called a "geeb," "GB," or "bucket bong" — is one of the most legendary DIY smoking devices in cannabis culture. It's cheap, fast to build, and delivers a dense, concentrated hit that's notoriously stronger than what you'd get from a pipe or joint.
In this guide, we'll cover what a gravity bong is, how it works, exactly how to build one in under 10 minutes, how to use it correctly, and important safety tips to keep in mind.
What is a Gravity Bong?
A gravity bong is a homemade smoking device that uses water and air pressure to force a large volume of smoke into your lungs all at once. The basic principle: a bottle is suspended in water, smoke fills the bottle as it's raised, and then the smoke is pushed into your lungs as the bottle is pressed back down.
There are two main styles:
Bucket bong (the classic): A small bottle is submerged in a bucket of water, then slowly lifted while the cannabis on top burns. The negative pressure pulls smoke into the bottle.
Waterfall bong: A bottle has a small hole near the bottom. As water drains out the hole, it creates suction that pulls smoke into the chamber.
Both deliver a similar result: a dense, concentrated cloud of smoke that gets pushed into your lungs all at once.
Why People Make Gravity Bongs
A few reasons gravity bongs have stayed popular for decades:
Strong hits with less weed. Because the smoke is concentrated and forced into your lungs rather than passively inhaled, you get a noticeably bigger high from less material.
Built from household items. No special equipment required — just a couple of bottles, foil, and water.
Fast to build. Most people can put one together in under 10 minutes.
Pure DIY culture. There's a reason artists like Kacey Musgraves reference it in songs ("Deeper Well") — gravity bongs are part of cannabis lore.
How to Make a Gravity Bong: Step-by-Step
Materials You'll Need
A small plastic bottle with cap (16–20 oz works well — a standard soda or water bottle)
A larger container — either a 2-liter bottle with the bottom cut off, or a bucket
Aluminum foil — or, for a healthier option, a small metal bowl piece or socket
A box cutter or sharp knife
A poking tool (a thumbtack, paper clip, or toothpick)
Cannabis flower (at least 0.5–1 gram, finely ground)
A lighter
Water
Step 1: Prepare the Bottles
Cut the bottom off your smaller plastic bottle. The amount you cut off determines how big the smoke chamber will be — the more you remove, the bigger the hit. For a first-timer, removing about an inch from the bottom is a reasonable starting point.
If you're using a 2-liter bottle as your water reservoir, cut the bottom off that one too. If you're using a bucket, you can skip this step.
Step 2: Build the Bowl
There are two ways to do this:
Option A — Aluminum foil (classic, but less healthy):
Unscrew the cap from the smaller bottle and set the bottle aside.
Cut a small piece of aluminum foil — about 3 inches square.
Press the foil into the threads of the cap, forming a small bowl-like indentation.
Use your poking tool to make 3–5 small holes in the foil for airflow.
Screw the foil-lined cap back onto the bottle.
Option B — Metal bowl piece (recommended): If you have a bowl piece from another smoking device, or a clean metal socket from a hardware store (½-inch typically works), you can melt a hole in the cap and fit the bowl piece through it. This is a much healthier option than foil and doesn't require replacement after each use.
Step 3: Set Up the Water Chamber
Fill your larger bottle or bucket with water, leaving about 2 inches of empty space at the top. Submerge the smaller bottle (with the cap and bowl screwed on) into the water. The water level inside the small bottle should be near the top — leaving just the cap above the waterline.
Step 4: Load the Bowl
Pack a moderate amount of finely ground cannabis into the foil bowl or metal piece. Don't overpack — you want airflow through the bowl, not a clogged surface. About 0.3–0.5 grams is a good starting amount for one hit.
Step 5: Light, Lift, and Inhale
This is the moment of truth.
Light the cannabis with one hand while slowly pulling the smaller bottle upward with the other. Don't pull it all the way out of the water — keep at least an inch submerged at the bottom.
As the bottle rises, smoke will fill the chamber. The slower you lift, the denser the smoke.
Once the bottle is full of thick white smoke, stop lifting.
Unscrew the cap carefully (with the bottle still partially in water).
Place your mouth over the bottle opening and gently push the bottle back down into the water. The water rising in the bottle forces all that concentrated smoke into your lungs.
Pull your mouth off before the water reaches the top.
Pro tip: Don't inhale while pushing the bottle down. Just let the water do the work — the smoke gets pushed into your lungs naturally. Inhaling at the same time can make the bottle collapse or send water into your mouth.
How to Use a Gravity Bong Correctly
A gravity bong hit is significantly more intense than a typical bowl or joint hit. A few important pointers:
Start small. Your first gravity bong hit should use about half the cannabis you'd normally use in a bowl. You can always scale up.
Exhale fully before taking the hit. Empty lungs hold more smoke.
Don't try to hold the smoke. A common myth — holding smoke doesn't increase the high, it just irritates your lungs. Inhale, hold for 1–2 seconds, then exhale.
Have water nearby. Gravity bong hits are big and tend to trigger coughing. A glass of water and a comfortable spot to sit are your friends.
Health and Safety: Important Reality Check
We'd be doing you a disservice if we didn't address this part honestly.
Plastic and aluminum foil aren't ideal. When you light a foil bowl, you're heating aluminum, and when smoke passes through hot plastic, you can release small amounts of harmful compounds. Occasional gravity bong use is one thing — making it your daily method is another.
For regular use, invest in a real bong. A glass or silicone water pipe gives you the same water-filtration benefits without the plastic and foil concerns. We carry both at The Novel Tree.
Don't use a gravity bong in the wind, near anything flammable, or while distracted. Burning material plus pulled-apart bottles plus open flames is a setup that requires attention.
Know your tolerance. Gravity bong hits can be 3–4x the size of a normal hit. If you're a casual smoker or new to cannabis, a single gravity bong rip can be too much. Pace yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a gravity bong and a waterfall bong? A gravity bong is submerged in a separate water container and lifted to fill with smoke. A waterfall bong has a hole in the bottom of the bottle that lets water drain out, creating suction that pulls smoke into the chamber. Both achieve a similar effect — concentrated smoke delivery.
Why is it called a "geeb"? "Geeb" is just slang for gravity bong — short for "GB." The term has been around since at least the early 2000s in cannabis communities.
How much weed do you use in a gravity bong? Less than you'd think. Because the hits are so concentrated, 0.3–0.5 grams is plenty for a single rip. Many people use even less.
Are gravity bongs harsh? Yes — gravity bong hits are notoriously harsh because the smoke isn't cooled or filtered as much as it is in a traditional water pipe. The volume is also bigger than your lungs are typically used to. Coughing is normal.
Can you make a gravity bong without aluminum foil? Absolutely. A small metal bowl piece, a metal socket, or a glass bowl piece from an existing smoking device all work well and are healthier than foil.
Is making a gravity bong legal? Possessing and using cannabis in Washington State is legal for adults 21+. Building a homemade smoking device for personal use is legal in WA. As always, follow local laws and use cannabis responsibly.
